Scientists Discover Huge Rat In Jungles Of Indonesia
JAKARTA, Indonesia -- Scientists said they have discovered two new species in the remote jungles of Indonesia, including a giant rat that is about five times the size of a city rat.
Scientists said the pygmy possum was discovered during an expedition into the mountains of Indonesia's Papua province in June.
They said it could be one of the smallest marsupials in the world. They also discovered the rat during the trip."The rat is an interesting one. It's 1.4 kilograms (just over 3 pounds)," said Neville Kemp of Conservation International. "It's about five times the size of a normal city rat that we would see running around Jakarta, for instance. It has got very large, long gray hair ... and a large wide underside."
A team of American and Indonesian scientists are working to confirm that the possum and rat are new species.
